My Story: From My Roots to My Clinical Work
Hello! Hola!你好! Oi!
My name is Kaiting Tu Bronson, and I am a Taiwanese-Chinese-American speech-language pathologist living in Leander, TX with my wonderful husband. I speak English natively, am fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and Portuguese, and have a beginner’s level of American Sign Language.
Over the past 10 years, I’ve been providing speech therapy services in the greater Austin Area, in the home health, school, teletherapy, and clinic settings. Along the way, my journey even took me to Bolivia and Ghana for some incredibly rewarding experiences helping communities abroad. My mission is to empower others to share their own unique stories with the world.
My Lived Experiences
Being a neurodivergent individual and a child of immigrants, I grew up both experiencing within myself, and observing within my family, the social isolation that results from communication struggles. It wasn’t always easy navigating different cultures and languages going to school in the USA, Taiwan, and China. I experienced bullying and struggled to keep up in school.
Despite these challenges, I loved having these opportunities to access an entirely different world. My grandparents didn’t speak English, and I remember at 6 years old thinking that I wouldn’t be able to understand all their awesome stories if I didn’t understand Mandarin. That’s when I first became fascinated in learning other languages so I could understand others expressing themselves in their most comfortable language.
A Holistic Approach to Speech Therapy
In addition to core clinical speech and language pathology training, I have dedicated additional time throughout my career studying counseling skills and am committed to fostering a warm and safe space for people to find purpose and joy in self expression. My blog post here elaborates on how I am a firm believer that meaningful communication always begins with connection.
The Art & Science Behind my Practice
When I’m not helping people learn to express themselves, I like to read, hula hoop, practice piano, and practice Shodo (Japanese calligraphy). I find that the self-reflection on the science of learning help me connect with my clients during our speech sessions. Japanese calligraphy teaches the beauty of a grounded focus. Piano challenges me to reflect on scaffolded learning. During speech therapy sessions, I breakdown complex concepts into tiny manageable steps, and teach with grounded patience, one step at a time.
